It was so hard to see the physical change, when I went down to San Diego to say goodbye. It hardly looked like him anymore. He was no longer responsive, but I'm sure that he knew we were there to love him and be with him before he went Home.
As hard as it was, I got to hold his hand, tell him what he meant to me, and that I loved him. If ever there was someone to look to as how I should be living my life, it was him.
This man spent his life for others. He was the rock that my mother and her sisters looked to when his wife, my grandmother, battled dementia. He took care of her until she passed.
He was my spiritual role model. He was in his eighties and going to the "Modern" service just to support the young people in his church.
I listened to story after story at his memorial service and there is no doubt in my mind that his time on this earth was spent in the service of others.
As I read what my friend wrote, it reminded me of his legacy that he passed on to us, his grandchildren. The rides to school, the fishing trips, trying to teach me to play golf. He gave me an example of faith, patience, and love of family and friends that I look to model my own life after.
I love you, Grandpa.
See you when I come Home.
Jeff
